My friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf

I had normal friendships in school…and really never had any close friendships after high school

Jeff Dahmer, Interview with Nancy Glass, Inside Edition, Febuary 1993

About the book

You only think you know this story. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer — the most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripper — seared himself into the American consciousness. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. To Derf Backderf, “Jeff” was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides.

In My Friend Dahmer, a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psyche — a shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer that few ever really knew, and one readers will never forget.

My Review

From the book, My Friend Dahmer

It feels sad every time I look at this picture.
We can see Jeff was like any other school kid. He could have achieved so much if things were normal in and out of his mind.

Some people might be afraid to read this book because it’s about the most horrifying criminal of all time. This book is not about a serial killer. But, the life of Jeff, a high school student, and the energy in the 1970s. Jeff did try a lot harder to restrain those disturbing thoughts from his mind until high school finishes and his parents were divorced.

So are we responsible to change people and make them monsters or was it Jeff’s fascination to know more about insides of the body, even if it was a fish, dog, or cat!!!

He had a habit of dissolving dead bodies into acids and see the remains throughout the process.

The author did an outstanding job of reciting the memory of his friend Jeffery Dahmer. How would someone feel to know his friend to be the most dangerous serial killer of all time, a friend who is counted after Jack the Ripper!!! The intensity of Jeff’s crimes are very scary. Derf, the author, shared his memory of Jeff. The high school recollections from the 1970s. The actual drawings they shared in the canteen.

At one point, Derf writes, where were the adults??

From the book, My Friend Dahmer

Who is responsible for Jeff’s uncontrollable mentality??
Do our school friends hold a top place to mold our thoughts?
I think, we all are kids at school and don’t hold the responsibility to advise anyone’s life because everyone has their problems.
Or the deteriorating relationship of Jeff’s parents, who were busy getting separated!!!

Derf establishes a graphic book to describe how things fell apart around Jeff. Maybe, there’s always a reason why a person turns his fate to evil by his own hands. He discusses the story of Dahmer from everyone’s point of view and the effect of disturbing incidences in his life that led to the destruction.
